There are so many exciting areas developing in the livestock industry. There’s room for growth and for new technology.

It’s Farmer Friday! MEET Nathaniel Modra from Western Flat, SA.

On the weekends, Nathaniel works alongside his two older brothers on their parents’ 1600-acre property in Western Flat, south of Bordertown. Together they run a mixed operation of 100 stud Limousin breeders and 800 sheep, as well as cropping and irrigated small seed production.

Most of the time, however, you’ll find Nathaniel studying towards a degree in Agricultural Science with the University of Adelaide, where he’s recently been elected president of the Ag Students Committee.

Nathaniel decided to formally pursue a career in Agriculture after a childhood spent on the farm and working in a local dairy throughout high school. He used profits from the latter to get involved in stud cattle, and has since grown his breeders. These experiences have instilled a love for fresh challenges—something that a career on the farm is sure to bring!

“I love waking up and knowing every day will be different with unique opportunities and problems to learn from,” Nathaniel says.

“And Mother Nature sure presents some challenges!”

Despite an evidently full plate, Nathaniel has also struck up a contracting business with his brother, Josh. Modra Bros Contracting specialises in an advanced method of clay spreading. In this venture, he appreciates the support of the people around him.

“I’m part of a community that shares their depth of experience, but also values my input and is willing to try a different approach to a problem,” Nathaniel says.
